National Parks are free for three summer weekends


The National Park Service has announced three fee-free weekends this season. Read: no entrance fees, tour fees or transportation fees.

The number of campers and daytrippers in our national parks overall have been on a steady decline. That’s why Ken Salazar, the new Secretary of the Interior, has announced that entry fees will be waived at the 147 national parks that charge them for three weekends this summer (June 20-21, July 18-19 and Aug. 15-16). Salazar said that besides free entrance to parks on some weekends, some park partners — including hotels, gifts shops and tour operators — will offer additional discounts and promotions on those dates. Information about them will be listed at www.nps.gov/findapark/feefreeparks.htm

That will save you anywhere from $3, charged at national historic parks and monuments, to $25 charged at the crowd-gathering whoppers like Yellowstone and Yosemite.

But don’t expect to camp for free; regular camping fees will still apply. The National Park Service typically waives entry fees on National Public Lands Day …
